In M2M applications GSM modules are generally used for communication utilizing mobile networks. Common GSM modules use serial or USB interface for connecting to equipment or devices. Connected devices use these GSM modules as modems for data transfer or as SMS communicators. Communication control has to be maintained by other device, because GSM modules usually do not have built-in „intelligence“.
Siemens GSM modules TC65, AC65 are new generation of modules, tzv. inteligent GSM modules. These modules have more powerfull procesor, higher memory and they are more or less small computers.
They can be used as communication equipment to transfer data, but also used as device controller. For example with GPS receiver it is possible to stand alone analysis about car position, car status and store other car information into the memory or in some cases start alarm. All this without any other external unit.
The following points are the key features of the Siemens GSM modules:- 10 programmable PINs, it is possible to use pins as input/output
- 2 serial ports for communication with surroundings, via converter it can be then converted to RS485, CANBUS … (ITU-T V.24 protocol)
- 1 industrial bus I2C for communication with another equipments with I2C interface
- 2 analog in (ADC)
- 1 analog out (PWM)
- Interface for external memory
